Wild Duck — 1989
Ngan Siu-Mui's Chinese Painting
Inscription
"Rosy clouds and a lonely duck take flight as one;
Autumn waters merge with the vast sky's single hue."
The lonely duck strays from its flock; the brilliant clouds soon fade.
No wonder poets and dreamers, gazing upon this scene,
Sigh and weep, unable to hold back their hearts.
But if one could be like Zhuangzi—
Giving one's soul to heaven and earth,
Forgetting time, forgetting right and wrong—
Then before this seamless sky and water,
One would simply look up and down, drifting in ease,
So lost in the oneness of self and nature.
That no thought of sorrow could ever arise.
Yet feelings are what make us human.
And deep in the heart, something stirs beyond our will.
When Su Dongpo smiled and said, "They laugh at me for being too full of feeling"—
Surely, this is what he meant.
