Chinese Watercolor painting classes are open to beginners as there is no previous training required. New and longtime students share the exciting voyage in the realm of Chinese arts under the guidance of Ngan Siu-Mui, a "Consummate artist who lives to teach others" (Killingbeck, The Chronicle).

Students learn how to use their wrist, elbow, forearm in order to move the Chinese brush energetically but always in control of it. Ngan Siu-Mui shows how to use Chinese ink, pigment and watercolor paper properly. Your painting will show lively movement, energetic strokes, and likeness to the subject. The end result is a well balanced composition.

The techniques used for this subject are very important;
they are part of the basic knowledge required for Chinese Painting.
Drawing Chinese Orchid is like writing calligraphy.
The sensation is very relaxing for the mind and body.

The above photo shows a Tree Peony.
However the sujects of these two online lessons are the Paeonia which is a rooting herb and the Tree Peony which is a woody shrub.
These two kinds of flowers are also called Peony in the West.
They have very similar types of flower and leaves.
Peonies bloom in early May but Paeonias bloom later.

  • Date and time: according to the student's and the teacher's schedule.
  • Duration: one hour.
  • Teacher: Ngan Siu-Mui.
  • Subject: according to your level as advised by the teacher.
  • One online lesson consists of two parts:
    • 1) Art techniques demonstration and explanation by the teacher.
    • 2) Your demonstration guided by the teacher.
  • Before the lesson
    An art sample is sent by email to the student who has to print it out so that it can be use during the lesson.
  • After the lesson follow-up
    • 1) A video clip related to the lesson is sent to the student.
    • 2) Advices from the teacher for practicing (homework) via email.
