Artist's Views
Being borned in Hong Kong and trained by a renowned master calligrapher and a painter, I have a very strong Chinese artistic imprint. Chinese culture gives me the feeling of a nice cup of tea soothing my spirit. I became a professional artist in Hong Kong in 1981 and now, after living 18 years in Quebec, I can acknowledge the profound impact that the western culture has on my art as if a glass of red wine overwhelmed my senses. Artistic ideas from the east and the west coexist but remain distinct from each others. Both can be seen in my new creations. Whatever my work is categorized, be it calligraphy, painting, traditional, contemporary, mixed or avant-garde, they are the reflection of myself, a person from the east having settled down in the west
Critic's Views
"There is no doubt that she (Ngan Siu-Mui) shows the highest technical skill in controlling the brush, so she masters
the form. But much more important, when, in her works, we look at the dance of the strokes she makes us imagine the
ideas that are bewitching the Mind of the Brush at the very moment of her artistic creation."
Yang Huelun
Cultural Counsellor to the Canadian Embassy of the Popular Republic of China.
"The artist, in a personal and unique manner, creates the link between East and West . . . Ngan Siu-Mui, as a painter and calligrapher, uses all of her amazing talent to merge the form and the Chinese calligraphy, thereby walking away from tradition but keeping a strong link with it."
Robert Bernier, Art Critic
