Summary

Internationally renowned, Ngan Siu-Mui was born in Hong Kong and has been living in Montreal since 1988. Disciple of the greatest masters, endowed with a remarquable talent, she has been, for the past 30 years, devoted to traditional Chinese arts. One of the founders and president (1981-1991) of the Xiao Feng Arts Society (Hong Kong), also founder of the Traditional Chinese Culture Society of Montreal and the Ngan Siu-Mui’s Art School, she currently teaches Chinese calligraphy, painting, seal carving and tea ceremony besides pursuing her artistic production. In 1992, Ngan Siu-Mui created the International Calligraphers Association of Canada.

As a calligrapher, she has contributed to the film The Red Violin and to the advertising of the Xi’an Exhibition held at the Quebec Civilization Museum in 2001; Merging Colours, a film focusing on Chinese artists, features her as a prominent artist working in Montreal. In 2002, on the invitation of the Xianyang Calligraphy Stele Committee of the Long Dam of Wei River (near Xi’an, China) she submitted a calligraphic artwork which was so well received that her work will be engraved in stone.

From her very first 1981 solo exhibition in Hong Kong City Hall, Ngan Siu-Mui has gained outstanding success. Since then, her work has been shown in more than 30 international exhibitions: the Canadian Museum of Civilization, Bishop University, Toronto, Saskatchewan and British Columbia Universities, the Old School Gallery in Australia, the Art House Gallery in Malaysia, Temple and Drexel Universities in Pennsylvania. Her work is also to be found in collections worldwide: Canadian Museum of Civilization, Korea’s Cultural Art Research Society, Redland District Council in Australia, Japan’s Coalition of International Calligraphers Association, the Taiwan Art Center and the Taiwan History Museum.

Throughout her career, Ngan Siu-Mui has received many honours: Certificat québécois de la citoyenneté pour sa contribution au rapprochement culturel, Medal of Excellence from the Asia Art Award Selection Committee in Korea, mentions of distinction for the All China Art Exhibition in Taiwan, a Certificate of Distinction for her Solo Exhibition which was organized in Taiwan by the Art Education Center. Ngan Siu-Mui has written Chinese Calligraphy, Abstract Art, Mind Painting and The Art of Ngan Siu-Mui; she also co-wrote The Art of Ngan Siu-Mui and her Group.
